West Hawaii blasts off at the Ellison Onizuka Space Center March 1, 2010

Did you know…the astronaut, Ellison Onizuka is from the island of Hawai’i? To further enhance the transportation theme, our Waimea ‘ohana travelled to the Ellison Onizuka Space center at the Keahole airport. Everyone enjoyed learning about space travel from a great tour guide Mrs. Tashima. We watched a short movie and participated in many hands on activities. Two of our keiki were asked to participate in the “space shuttle blast off.” Nathan and Caylee lead our group in the count down and then pushed the blast off button to launch the space shuttle into the air. One keiki, Eric said, “That’s Amazing!” as he watched the simulated space shuttle take off.

Caregivers and keiki were so involved with the activities that they were saddened to leave but mentioned that they will be back to visit. Our ‘ohana were thankful for this opportunity since many did not know this place existed. If you ever have extra time while at the Keahole airport in Kona, stop by the Ellison Onizuka Space Center. It’s a blast!
