Wai‘anae High School 9th Graders’ lessons in math turn into lessons in life, and giving January 10, 2011

“Wai ‘anae High School students from Mr. Bailey’s 9th grade math classes started a recycling project to learn about mathematics. The purpose of the ten-week project was to determine the amount of bottles and cans that were not collected in the recycling bins around campus….

The math lesson turned into a community service project when the students realized that they had raised approximately $200 from recycling their collected cans and bottles and decided to purchase slippers with the money collected and then donate them to families in need on the Wai‘anae Coast.

By teaming with Partners in Development – Ka Pa‘alana program represented by Jason Kahawai, the students individually wrapped slippers that were given to houseless families on the west side.”
