Volunteers take part in Nelson Mandela Day by giving back to community July 18, 2016

On Saturday, July 18, 2016, organizers from the State AFL-CIO brought together dozens of volunteers on the grounds of the Lunalilo Homes and Adult Day Care as part of this year’s Nelson Mandela Day. Volunteers from a number of different unions and organizations came together to not only beautify the grounds but to spend time with the residents doing a variety of activities. The goal? To make a difference in the community by giving of one’s time, energy, passion.

“Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now.”

It is more than a celebration of Mandela’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.”
