Steve Hanks

Steve Hanks is a math teacher at Honokaʻa High & Intermediate School. Steve grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis.  After graduating from North Dakota State University, he joined the Peace Corps and served as a math teacher for 3 years in the island nation of Papua New Guinea.

Shortly after returning from Papua New Guinea, he enrolled in the Peace Corps Fellows program at San Francisco State University and taught at McAteer High School. He moved to Honokaʻa, Hawaiʻi, the summer of 1995, where he has been teaching math ever since.

Over the course of his 25 year career as a math teacher, he has served in various roles and conducted many workshops for teachers. One memorable highlight of his career happened during the summer of 2001. He went to South Africa to help train the first generation of Black South African mathematics teachers after Apartheid. Steve is married and raised 3 children in Honoka’a.
