Anela Akiu, a 6th grader from Kamehameha Schools, raised money and donated about 250 new and lightly used children’s books to the families in the Ka Pa‘alana Homeless Family Education Program. Earlier in the year Anela and her classmates met and served homeless families on the Leeward coast through clean up projects and providing a meal. After learning about the Ka Pa‘alana program, Anela was moved to action and decided one way she could make a difference was to provide books for the homeless keiki.

On April 17, 2014 Anela and her mom, Kelly, brought several boxes of books for the families at Hope Shelter in Kalaeloa. The keiki and parents were surprised and grateful for this wonderful gift, and were eager to read their new books. Mahalo Anela and Kelly for your compassion and generosity. It is humbling and beautiful when timeless values like aloha and mālama are made visible.
