Mālama I ke kai – Makakilo and Kahalu‘u take a Glass Bottom Boat Ride September 20, 2010

For the month of August, our keiki and their ‘ohana were able to learn all about the ocean and our Hawaiian Value; mālama i ke kai. To support this theme and value, our families from the Makakilo and Kahalu‘u sites went on a Glass Bottom Boat ride at He‘eia Pier in Kāne‘ohe. We got to see many different kinds of fish and even saw a few turtles. I bet the fish were really happy with all the bread we fed them!

Our Makakilo families are ready to look through the glass and see the beautiful fish and coral reef. Aunty Rhonda showed us some of the fish we would see such as our Hawai‘i state fish, the humuhumunukunukuāpua‘a. We even got to learn the humuhumunukunukuāpua‘a hula!

The Kahalu‘u families were looking for turtles. “There is a turtle, (honu)”! They also received a special treat when the Boat Captain took them onto the sandbar. Aunty Rhonda’s knowledge of the history of Chinaman’s Hat and the mountains of Kualoa was very educational.

It was a great learning experience and fun was had by all!
