Family Education Program Helps Adults Overcome Hurdles and Graduate June 10, 2014

On Saturday, May 31, 2014, Leeward Community College’s Theatre was filled with General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and Competency Based High School Diploma Program (CBHSDP) graduates. Among these graduates were seven proud parents from PIDF’s Ka Pa‘alana Homeless Family Education Program.

Many of our program parents do not have their high school diploma and as a result have a difficult time finding employment that would allow them to adequately support their families. For these parents and their families, graduation was a huge milestone because many of them had to overcome what may seem to some as “simple” hurdles such cost of books and registration fees.

Thanks to our generous funders, Ka Pa‘alana’s Adult Education program was able to assist parents by taking them to register for classes; paying for books, classes, and testing; and assisting them with homework. Ka Pa‘alana also helped parents prepare resumes, practice for interviews, and apply for jobs online and at job fairs.

Ka Pa‘alana is very proud of each of our graduates and their families. Kūlia i ka nu‘u, parents of Ka Pa‘alana.
