Books, Chickens and Coffee? May 4, 2011

Books, books, books for sale. Come get your books! The East Hawai‘i team had a Scholastic book fair fundraiser for Partners in Development Foundation and Tūtū and Me Traveling Preschool. The keiki and their ‘ohana enjoyed shopping at “school” and of course supporting PIDF and Tūtū and Me. It was a great learning experience for our team and our families had fun!

At the end of the month we headed off to the Hilo Coffee Mill located in Mt. View for our huaka‘i. We saw free range chickens. They were really happy chickens and even had a “Chicken Hotel.” Everyone was able to feed and pet them and even saw chickens with disabilities. One had a cast and one had a crooked beak. Our tour guides, Aunty Wanette and Chelsea explained to us how disabilities exist all over nature. That makes people and animals different and special and reminds us to be grateful for our health.

We were also able to see some coffee trees. Did you know that it takes 6 years for a coffee tree to be mature enough to harvest? No wonder coffee is so expensive and yummy! The Coffee Mill staff was so hospitable; they even baked some cookies for us. Mmm…they were ono! Don’t worry, we washed out hands! We concluded our huaka’i with an egg hunt and even got to take fresh eggs home. What a great way to end the month!
