Preschool Teacher’s Assistant 3

Primary Purpose

Responsible for assisting Preschool Teacher (PT) in the designed curriculum for caregivers and keiki while abiding by and maintaining accreditation and licensing standards at accredited and/or licensed sites.

Essential Duties

  • Perform all duties of a Preschool Teacher’s Assistant 1 (TA1):
    • Interact with caregivers and keiki in a helpful and professional manner;
    • Establish effective relationships with program participants;
    • Assist the PT in an Early Childhood Education (ECE) setting;
    • Assist the PT in planning and providing indoor and outdoor activities that foster learning;
    • Assist in the set up and break down of preschool sites and events;
    • Participate in loading and unloading of the vans; disinfecting and cleaning of materials as needed; prepping preschool materials as needed;
      Track and record participant attendance at site as directed;
    • May assist in the assessment of participants;
  • Perform additional duties of a Preschool Teacher’s Assistant 3 (TA3):
    • Abide by and maintain the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation standards and Code of Ethical Conduct;
    • Abide by and maintain the State of Hawai‘i licensing standards.

Other Duties

Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to, completing all forms and documentations such as reports related to grant objectives, professional development evaluations, and daily logs.

Work Hours

  • 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or as otherwise determined by the supervisor; Position requires regular and predictable attendance;
  • Some events on nights or weekends at various times depending on the event.

Working Conditions

  • Program sites at either shelter or designated area homeless encampments, various event sites, meeting and professional development sites;Office setting;
  • Travel in program and/or personal vehicle to and from program sites.

Equipment Use

May include use of: program and/or personal vehicle, platform dolly, hand trucks, computer, laptop, laminator, Cricut, copier, shredder, fax machine, video and camera equipment, generator, speaker system, iPod, office elevator, warehouse gate, nametag maker, ice machine, stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, paper cutter, office phones, work cell phones/Bluetooth.

Mental:

  • Must be able to prioritize and focus on multiple tasks that require analysis and attention to detail;

  • Must be able to cope with stress that may be induced by the situations of our clients.
Physical:
  • Must participate in strenuous activities which may include loading/unloading of vans and washing of the vans, mats and tarps; set up and break down of tents;
  • Requires lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds on a regular basis;
  • Must be able to sit and work on floor; kneel and bend.
Communication:
  • Must exhibit courteous and professional demeanor towards program participants, vendors and partners, staff and administration via verbal, written, physical, and electronic correspondence;
  • Requires good oral and written communication skills;
  • Must be able to handle and maintain highly confidential information.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Accredited Sites:
    1. High school diploma or equivalent;
    2. Actively working towards* a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition or a minimum of 12 college credits** (semester hours) in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education that encompass the following: child development and learning of children birth through kindergarten; family and community relationships; observing, documenting, and assessing young children; teaching and learning; and professional practices and development;
    3. At least one (1) year working as a teacher’s assistant in a school setting with young children ages birth through five (5);
  • Licensed Sites:
    1. High school diploma or equivalent;
    2. Some experience working with young children ages birth through five (5) in an educational setting;
  • Both Accredited and Licensed Sites:
    1. Must be registered with the Hawai‘i Department of Human Services Early Childhood Registry with a minimum designation of “Child Care Aide” under the age group for which the employee will be working (either Group Child Care or Infant/Toddler);
    2. Must adhere to the foundation’s code of conduct and core values;
    3. Must be knowledgeable of and comply with child care laws;
    4. Shall not have a criminal history record, employment history or child abuse/neglect history which poses a risk to children in care as specified in section 17-892.1-3 and to infants and toddlers in care as specified in section 17-895-3 in the Department of Human Services’ Hawai‘i Administrative Rules;
    5. Must be at least sixteen years old as required by licensing requirement;
    6. Must have a valid driver’s license, a safe and responsible driving record, current no-fault auto insurance, with at least the minimum State of Hawai‘i coverage requirements (operating company vehicles only);
    7. Preference: Experience working with homeless and at-risk families of Ka Pa‘alana’s host culture.
